該排名基于Google Scholar中的研究引文，許多大學都更加重視在線發布研究結果。
谷歌學術（Google Scholar）是一個可以免費搜索學術文章的Google網絡應用。該項索引包括了世界上絕大部分出版的學術期刊， 可廣泛搜索學術文獻的簡便方法。您可以從一個位置搜索眾多學科和資料來源：來自學術著作出版商、專業性社團、預印本、各大學及其他學術組織的經同行評論的文章、論文、圖書、摘要和文章。Google 學術搜索可幫助您在整個學術領域中確定相關性最強的研究。
注意：2021年1月的Webometrics總排名尚未公布，該排名包含4個指標：
1.presence：是該大學主域名下5％的網頁總數。
2.visibility（impact）：是從子網到大學網頁的50％的鏈接數。
3.openness：是指Google學術搜索群中10％的研究人員被引用的次數（這次給出的排名）。
4.excellence：scimago數據庫中包含35％的論文和被引論文的數量。
